Serious Invokana Side Effects
Also known by the generic name canagliflozin, Invokana is manufactured by Johnson & Johnson and was approved by the FDA in July 2011. Invokana works by regulating blood sugar levels in adult patients with Type 2 diabetes, triggering the kidneys to take sugar from the body through the urine to lower blood sugar levels.
Health problems associated with Invokana are potentially life-threatening and include:
- Ketoacidosis
Diabetic ketoacidosis is a medical emergency that occurs when toxic wastes known as ketones build up in the bloodstream. The condition usually occurs when the body does not have enough insulin to use glucose (sugar) as a source of energy. Instead, it starts burning fat cells. When fat is broken down, however, dangerous acids called ketones build up in the blood and urine. High levels of ketones in the body can cause diabetic coma or even death.
- Kidney damage
Kidney damage occurs when the kidneys do not remove waste products from the blood. Invokana may increase the chance of kidney damage and failure.
- Leg or foot amputation
Amputation may be required when the vascular system is no longer able to transport blood to the legs and feet. Over time, the feet and legs may become infected with gangrene. In order to avoid the spread of gangrene, the affected area must be removed through amputation.
- Serious urinary tract infections
- Broken bones ( factures )
Other side effects include:
- Dehydration
- Vaginal yeast infection
- Yeast infection of the penis
- Changes in urination, including the urgent need to urinate more often, in larger amounts, or at night
- High potassium in blood (hyperkalemia)
- Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)
- Increase in cholesterol
Invokana Health Risks
There is an increased risk of injury and negative Invokana side effects among patients who have:
- High or low blood pressure
- High potassium levels
- Decreased kidney function or kidney failure
- Decreased liver function or liver failure
- Low-salt diet
